On April 21, 2010, the Board of Directors of the Rockville Centre Education Foundation approved the grants as listed below for the Rockville Centre School District. Thirteen of the 26 received proposals have been approved for full or partial funding for the 2010-11 school year. These grants total $30,853.

2010-11 RVC Education Foundation Grants *1. High School Winning Wars: Air and Submarine Power $1363 and Middle School in World War II and Beyond Laurie Burke Supporting a trip for 30 students in grades 7-12 to the Chris Colesanti USS Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum led by the military
historian and college professor who guided the Gettysburg program in 2009. 2. High School Scholars in Cyberspace 2 $3000 Carol Burris Piloting interactive, on-line IB courses John Murphy (Economics, Business and Management, and Technology in a Global Society) that would not otherwise be offered at the HS. Five students will take classes in this first-time offered program with students from across the US as well as from other countries. 3. Middle School Starlab $13, 550 & District-wide Supporting the purchase of Starlab, a Matthew Greenberg portable planetarium, to be used to complement and deepen the curriculum and student engagement in the sciences as well as in other curricular areas. 4. Middle School Voracious Reader Award $225 Ronnie Dien Recognizing 6 students who have excelled in the school’s independent reading program by awarding them bookstore gift certificates and listing them on a plaque in the lobby. (2/grade) *5. District-wide Video-conferencing for Every 1st Grader $2505 Joseph Gallina Making it possible for all first graders in the district to participate in a virtual field trip to the Indianapolis Zoo where they will take part in a workshop called “The Mitten” (based on the classic winter tale by Jan Brett). 6. District-wide Critters in the Cold $1470 Laura Moore Enabling all kindergartners to participate in a virtual Christine Dodd field trip to the Antarctic and Arctic regions to discover how animals adapt to extreme weather; sponsored by the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum. *7. Covert Author in Residence $1000 Jennifer Boehm Supporting the residency of children’s author Chris Figaro Eve Feldman to help reading and writing come to life for 2nd grade students by working with them in the story development and writing process. 8. Hewitt Mentor Program $350 Supporting materials for a new program Lisa Panebianco- connecting at-risk students with trained adults who Yearwood provide academic and emotional support in a safe and nurturing environment. 9. Hewitt Book of the Season $1500 Elizabeth Pryke Purchasing books that will enhance students’ reading experiences, promote character education, and model critical thinking technique for teachers in grades K-5 through the participation of the school’s principal who, every month, will present a book to each classroom, read it and discuss it with the students. 10. Riverside Learning Garden $1265 Andrea Schlezes For the creation of an outdoor, dynamic environment in which students K-5 can discover, experiment, nurture, and learn from real-life experiences rather than textbooks. 11. Watson We are the World, We are the Children $2025 Susan Kahan Supporting a school-wide program using the Tricia Montemarano arts, technology, stories, games and food to Alisa Toth familiarize students (K-5) with the diverse and varied peoples of the world so that students gain an understanding, appreciation, tolerance and empathy for others. 12. Watson Global Awareness through Drama $600 Melissa Schlaks Expanding upon the school’s K-5 literature program by providing multicultural books which in turn will increase students’ repertoire of literature that is retold and interpreted through drama. *13. Wilson Wilson School Greenhouse Horticulturist $2000 Kara Spinelli Funding the residency of a horticulturist to deepen and expand the third and fourth-grade, hands-on science curriculum utilizing the outdoor classroom funded last year by the RVC Ed. Foundation. (All grades will participate to some degree)

Some of our past grants have funded:
- A student proposal to redesign the high school student paper
- A school-wide project integrating environmental studies and action into various aspects of the curriculum
- The innovative use of technology for teaching ESL students
- Creation of a moot courtroom in the high school
The Foundation seeks proposals that enhance the excellence of the Rockville Centre School system. Proposals are evaluated according to the following criteria:
• Description and rationale behind the proposal (What the project is and why there is a need)
- Potential impact across grade, department, school or community
- Integration into the school program
- Demonstration or articulation of long-term benefits
Coordination with the administration is essential and must be articulated in the grant application.
